Environment

Wilpinjong Mine is committed to responsible and sustainable practices, continuously working to comply with strict environmental and regulatory standards.

Monitoring the impact of our activities

Our team of experienced environmental specialists develop and implement comprehensive plans to minimise impacts on the environment.

Our monitoring sites provide us with noise, static air quality, water and meteorological data in real time that allow us to make informed decisions about our operations each day to limit any potential impact.

These stations continuously transmit data to a central hub where alarms alert the team if certain levels are reached.

WCPL noise alarms are at:

  • Wollar
  • Mogo Road
  • Ringwood Road

All sampling and monitoring follow NSW EPA guidelines, with daily real-time data reporting and regular updates on static data and trends.

Managing the impact of our activities

Our targeted plans manage and minimise impacts, with controlled measures to reduce noise and dust and improve air quality, ensuring minimal disruption to the environment and surrounding community.

We adapt our operations by:

  • Strategically planning fleet schedules to avoid placements in noise sensitive areas
  • Positioning dust prone activities with consideration environmental conditions, to maximise separation distances and avoiding dust pollution
  • Overseeing fleet numbers to ensure the optimal number of machines are running at any given time

We also reduce operational impacts by:

  • Adjusting mine activities for day and night conditions and halting operations during adverse weather
  • Promptly rehabilitating mined land and promoting direct topsoil placement to reduce exposed areas and enhance rehabilitation
  • Dampening roads and stockpiles with water trucks and automatic sprays to control dust
  • Replacing standard vehicle horns with silent alternatives to reduce noise and educating employees on noise and dust reduction techniques
  • Covering coal conveyors and minimising tip heights to reduce environmental impact
  • Conducting extensive cultural heritage studies, documenting Aboriginal cultural heritage sites and actively managing and minimising impacts on them through our Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan

Managing Emissions:

  • We recognise the effects of climate change must be addressed and that we have a responsibility to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions
  • Wilpinjong Mine operates as one of the region’s lowest-emission coal extractors
  • We comply with the Federal Government’s Safeguard Mechanism which monitors and mandates baseline limits for our emissions

Ongoing Rehabilitation

Wilpinjong Mine progressively rehabilitates land that we have disturbed as soon as it is no longer needed for mining. Land is seeded with native grasses and complemented with tube stock to return it to native woodland to attract the critically endangered Regent Honey Eater.

In 2024 we rehabilitated 87ha of land to take the total rehabilitated land we are managing to 1098ha. We’re on track to complete rehabilitation of another 98ha in 2025.

Recognised for Environmental Excellence

Our team was awarded the NSW Mining Environmental Excellence Award for constructing a purpose-built opening to an old mine shaft to provide endangered microbats shelter after their existing structure had deteriorated.

Ongoing Rehabilitiation

In 2023 we rehabilitated another 74ha of land to take the total rehabilitated land we are managing to 1020ha. We’re on track to complete rehabilitation of another 82ha in 2024.
