Strong community support for continued mining at Wilpinjong

Community members, local workers and regional partners have shown strong support for Wilpinjong Mine’s modification, which seeks approval to continue mining in Pit 8 through to 2033.

The NSW Government recently invited public submissions on the proposal and the response demonstrated clear confidence in Wilpinjong’s role as a responsible operator and major local employer.

More than two‑thirds of all submissions supported the modification, with support even stronger across the Mudgee region – 86% of local submissions backed continued mining in Pit 8. Encouraging messages also came from communities near Wilpinjong’s other operations, along with valued suppliers including WesTrac, Aurizon and Mudgee Toyota.

General Manager Mark Eaglesham said the level of support reflected the mine’s long‑standing contribution to the region.

“People understand the importance of Wilpinjong to local jobs, local businesses and the broader economy,” he said. “We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to have their say.”

If approved, the modification will help secure more than 700 local jobs and ensure Wilpinjong remains one of Australia’s most productive and lowest emitting coal mines.

Wilpinjong now awaits the NSW Government’s determination on the application.
