For many, stepping into the mining industry can be a daunting prospect, but for Raffay Rao, the journey at Wilpinjong Mine has been filled with growth, challenges, and plenty of Aussie slang.
Starting as a Graduate Electrical Engineer in January 2023, Raff quickly found his footing in the dynamic world of mining. After completing the graduate program, he successfully transitioned into the role of Reliability Engineer, where he now focuses on ensuring critical equipment operates at peak efficiency, minimising downtime, and improving long-term reliability.
“The transition from my graduate role to a Reliability Engineer has been smooth, thanks to the exposure I had during the Graduate Program. Now, I’m dealing with more specialised and complex problems, but I love applying my knowledge in new ways,” he shared.
Career Aspirations and Growth
With two years in the industry and a strong technical foundation, Raff’s long term vision for leadership within the mining sector is clear. His goal is to gain both hands-on technical skills and business expertise before pursuing an MBA, with aspirations of contributing to high-level strategic decision-making in the future.

Life Beyond the Site
Outside of work, Raff has found life in Mudgee to be an adventure of its own. Renting a farm property, learning about self-sustainability and the importance of daylight.
“The summer heat is intense, and I’m still adjusting to the reptiles, but the mornings here are peaceful, and the landscapes are breathtaking. There’s something special about starting the day surrounded by nature.”
