Wilpinjong Mine Raises $23,000 for Pink Up Mudgee Breast Cancer Fundraiser

In October, the team at Wilpinjong Mine proudly raised $23,000 for Pink Up Mudgee, a breast cancer initiative, with funds presented to the organisation in November.

Pink Up Mudgee was the first community event to turn the town pink for the McGrath Foundation, originally founded by Mudgee local Hugh, who had a personal connection to breast cancer. This initiative aims to raise funds for placing nurses in regional centres, recognising that these areas are among the most under-resourced. The campaign has since inspired other towns to join, making a significant impact across regional Australia.

A successful, community fundraiser

Wilpinjong’s involvement in Pink Up Mudgee reinforces its commitment to the community. The team raised funds through sales of fluoro pink work shirts, pink safety packs, and BBQ fundraisers.

“With so many young women in our workforce, supporting this cause hits close to home,” said Wilpinjong Mines’ Commercial Superintendent Gabrielle Dries. “From pink high-vis shirts to safety packs and raffles, our team has embraced this cause with impressive enthusiasm.”

The high-vis pink shirts, purchased locally from Mudgee supplier Stripes, were worn by Wilpinjong staff, family members, and suppliers, all aligned with the campaign’s awareness-raising theme. “Some of our employees even bought pink shirts for their entire families,” Dries added. “Seeing everyone in pink on Wednesdays has really brought the team together.”

In addition to the shirts, Wilpinjong Mines organised raffles with prizes from local businesses valued at $1,500, and crew BBQs to generate further contributions. Pink PPE gear, including safety glasses, shoelaces, and safety clips, was also included in safety packs for employees.

Uniting the Mudgee community

Pink Up Mudgee has united the community, with Market and Church Streets awash in pink flowers, decorated shopfronts, and personal stories shared throughout October. Wilpinjong’s engagement extended to encouraging employees and their partners to visit the Breast Cancer Bus for regular health checks.

“The level of engagement from staff has been inspiring, from the BBQs to safety packs. We’re incredibly proud of everyone’s support to raise awareness and start these important conversations,” Dries said.

Over the past two years, Wilpinjong Mine has contributed $38,000 to Pink Up Mudgee, underscoring the power of local businesses coming together for a cause that impacts so many.
